"Paul Sherwin's Precious Bane is at once the definitive study of the poetry of William Collins and also the best informed, most critically acute book yet written upon the Miltonic influence on subsequent poetry. Sherwin's deep learning and original insights illuminate Milton and Keats quite as much as they do Collins and the other tragic poets.   IT IS HARD, now, to imagine a Prime Minister writing a foreword to a novel and celebrating its account of “a soul’s loveliness”. Stanley Baldwin read Mary Webb’s Precious Bane at Christmas , less than a year before her was, he wrote, “the fresh and crushing answer” to the “stupid urban view of the countryside as dull.

[Mary Webb] -- The story is set in rural Shropshire shortly after the Napoleonic Wars. It is narrated by the central character, Prue Sarn, whose life is blighted by having a harelip. Only the weaver, Kester.

Precious Bain is a beautiful story. This abridgment takes out all of the descriptive language of the author plus the details that give it life. Descriptions of countryside, the building of relationships, depth of the characters both good and bad, It is more a dramatization, or the soundtrack of a short bad movie then a book. I wish I had been. BOOK I. CHAPTER 1 SARN MERE. It was at a love-spinning that I saw Kester first. And if, in these new-fangled days, when strange inventions crowd upon us, when I hear tell there is even a machine coming into use in some parts of the country for reaping and mowing, if those that mayhappen will read this don't know what a love-spinning was, they shall hear in good time.

A book unlike any I've read before, but it was one of the most pure and beautiful stories I've ever read. Precious Bane is not a quick read, the language in particular made the reading a bit slower (it is written in Old English and dripping with 19th century superstitions), but it could not have been told any other way/5.

Precious Bane, recommended by a librarian, was the first romantic novel I read that had young people (as opposed to, say, Jane Eyre as an adult, where the romance is so palpable.

I recommend this beautifully written book (not great; that must be reserved for great), as a charming book for 13 years up with a liking for a vocabulary that includes /5(54). Mary Webb was born – and Precious Bane was published in I had read several of Mary Webb's novels before and always found them engaging and compelling.

Similar in atmosphere to Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbevilles" it captures a great feeling of the remoteness of the countryside and the isolation that the characters live with/5().
